# What llms.txt and Markdown pages can provide

A curated llms.txt index and clean Markdown alternatives can make public information easier to retrieve. They are supplementary publishing formats, not ranking guarantees. A pricing page and its Markdown alternative should resolve the same price configuration so that readers receive consistent information. Do not claim that every crawler reads llms.txt or that its presence ensures inclusion in AI answers.

## Decide which reader each format serves

The normal website remains the main place for visitors to understand the business and act. A Markdown alternative can provide the same substantive information in a simpler text format. An llms file can offer a curated overview and links to useful resources. Think of these as additional ways to read the information, not replacements for navigation, search controls or the website itself.

The [llms.txt proposal](https://llmstxt.org/) describes a convention rather than a universal requirement imposed on every business site. Support can differ between systems and evolve over time. A supplier should therefore explain the intended use without claiming that the presence of the file guarantees search inclusion, ranking or recommendations.

For a small service business, a useful overview might identify the service, available languages, package scope and key guides. It should not repeat every article in one enormous document simply because a filename contains “full.” A manageable summary linked to complete individual pages is easier for the business to review and keep accurate.

## Generate equivalents from the same approved content

Suppose the HTML package page says that domain renewal is a separate cost while its Markdown counterpart says everything is included. The problem is not a file-format choice; it is two independent sources drifting apart. Generate both outputs from the same content model where practical, and resolve prices and routes from the same configuration.

A useful Markdown page includes the title, language, canonical page address, meaningful headings and the actual explanation. Remove navigation clutter and executable scripts. Keep source links and important limitations. The reader should not receive a shortened sales paragraph when the website contains a detailed account of what the package excludes.

Test a sample pair by asking plain questions: what is offered, in which currency, what is included, what is separate and how does someone apply? The answers should match. Repeat the comparison after a pricing or scope update. Deterministic checks can catch missing sections and unresolved tokens, while a human review checks whether the wording remains clear.

## Keep publication and privacy boundaries explicit

Only public information belongs in these resources. Do not export contact-form submissions, administrator notes, diagnostic traces or private contact details simply because a generator can see them. Build the public resource list from an allowlist of intended pages rather than serialising the entire application's data.

Give each alternative a stable address and appropriate content type. If it is intended as a reading alternative rather than a separate search result, the deployment should express that choice clearly. The normal HTML page can link to its Markdown equivalent so a reader or tool can discover it without guessing a path. Test those actual links in the published output.

Finally, put maintenance responsibility in the handover notes. A supporting text layer that becomes stale can undermine the clarity it was meant to provide. The valuable result is a consistent public information set with readable alternatives. The file itself is only one part of that arrangement, and its usefulness should be assessed without inventing a measured AI visibility benefit.

**A sample resource review.** Open the HTML service page and its Markdown alternative side by side. Read the inclusion list, exclusions and application link. Then look at the short overview that links to them. A reader should understand which document is a summary and where the complete explanation lives.

Check that a price update reaches both formats and that the language of the summary matches the selected locale. Confirm that internal links resolve to the intended public pages, not preview addresses or private administration routes. A technically readable file with broken destinations provides little practical help.

Finally, describe the scope accurately in the resource itself. If a full overview contains business facts and package details but not every article body, say so. Link to individual articles rather than implying the file is a complete archive. Clear labelling makes the resource easier for people and tools to use while avoiding exaggerated claims about coverage. The same principle applies to any custom facts file: explain its purpose without presenting it as an official internet standard.

## Practical checklist

- Link canonical HTML pages
- Use the same content source
- Exclude private information

**A concrete example:** A pricing page and its Markdown alternative should resolve the same price configuration so that readers receive consistent information.

**A boundary to keep clear:** Do not claim that every crawler reads llms.txt or that its presence ensures inclusion in AI answers.
